LANGUAGE ARTS- Drama and Performing Arts
Students will be fully engaged in supporting each other to improve dramatic and performance skills. We explore multiple elements of drama and performing arts in this fun filled unit. Play writing, costume design, and theater presentation components will be applied to create exciting culminating productions.
MATH- Applying Mathematical Skills to Art
Core skills in art and math are closely related! There are endless ways in which art can be used to teach math. And it’s an excellent strategy. Each requires spatial reasoning skills and the ability to recognize patterns. For example, both artists and mathematicians use geometry in their work. There must be an understanding of shapes, symmetry, proportion, and measurement. Through arts integration, students will learn how math can be creative, and how art can be analytical. Students will strengthen their skills in each and develop a sense of who they really are as learners.
HISTORY/ SOCIAL STUDIES- Music History
Why teach music history? It brings music alive and makes it more meaningful! Using music in the classroom enhances students' understanding of history and makes past cultures come alive. Music is an artifact of culture that can tell us about the people who created it and the times they lived in. Guiding students to explore the historical purpose and background of the music they sing and play will make for more meaningful learning and performing.

Remediation and Enhancements
Below are some links to sites that can help students (and parents) practice skills that are recognized in the classroom. Although this is not a connection to what we are doing in ERP classes, I wanted to offer help at home if or when it's needed with SOL related topics through my website. I haven't gone through all of these sites extensively, however there are skill specific resources that can help your child as a learner.
IXL is a site that some students are already using. This affords a practice in both Math and Language Arts/English skills for K-12 students. Additionally, there's a states standard recognition on this site that will identify specific SOL alignment to those skills on IXL.
~Practice that feels like play Dynamic, adaptive learning |
Goodwill Community Foundation is a site that can offer help, not only with SOLs and/or students, but for parents as well. Free tutorials and learning opportunities range from core subject areas and skills to technology, microsoft office, everyday life, and even work and career.
